Drainage
Drainage and foundation problems in Baton Rouge.
Water against the slab is behind a lot of foundation movement. Getting it away from the house is the cheapest repair there is.
Gutters
Downspouts that dump at the slab.
A downspout that empties right at the foundation soaks the clay in one spot every storm. Extending it several feet out, or into a buried line, keeps that corner from swelling and shrinking more than the rest.
Grading
The ground should slope away.
Over the years, flower beds get built up and soil settles until water runs toward the house. Regrading so the ground falls away from the slab keeps water from pooling against it.
Dry spells
Drought moves houses too.
In a long dry summer, clay shrinks away from the slab. Steady watering around the foundation during droughts helps keep the soil from pulling back.
