Cracks
Brick and wall cracks: what they mean.
Some cracks are cosmetic. Some are the house telling you a part of it has moved. Here is how to tell the difference.
Brick
Stair-step cracks follow the mortar.
A crack that climbs diagonally through the mortar joints, especially from the corner of a window or door, usually means one part of the wall has settled relative to the rest. A crack that goes straight through the bricks themselves is worth a look sooner.
Inside
Drywall cracks at the corners.
Cracks running up from the corners of doors and windows, gaps where the wall meets the ceiling, and nail pops in a line are common signs of movement. One hairline crack in a hallway may be nothing.
Watch it
Mark the ends with a pencil.
Put a pencil mark and the date at each end of a crack. If it grows past the marks over a few months, the house is still moving and it is time to call.
